Barefoot Books review and giveaway ends 1/23

     There are books everywhere in my house. Paige's room, the living room, my desk, and even the stairs. Piper likes to look at the pictures and make up her own stories but my true reader is Paige. She begs her sister to sit down with her so she can read to her. Paige's teacher gauged her reading and at a recent confrence told me that she is reading at a 4th grade level with a 3rd grade comprehension level. That is not too shabby for a 7 year old 1st grader!  We are so proud of her!

     I was sent 2 new books by Barefoot Books to review. I figured Paige would have no problem breezing through them until I looked at the actual stories myself. I assumed they were just your standard hardcover kids books (hardcover is a big plus by the way). She came to me and asked for help. I sat down with her and we had family story time in the livingroom. I read while Hubby, Piper, and Paige listened. (am I the only one who can't read aloud without yawning?)

     I picked up one of the books I was sent and the first thing that struck me was the size. The Barefoot Book of Dance Stories is a very thick well made book. The second thing I noticed was the beauty and quality of the illistrations, they are very bold and eye catching and beautifully drawn. The stories are not "short" each being 3-6 full pages long.

     I am thinking that even though this particular book is for ages 8 and up I would recommend it for maybe 10 years and up. There are a lot of very large words that Paige was unable to read and it speaks of some things that are above her age. Gods and goddesses, witches, and the deaths of couragious men. The death part is one that she had the most trouble with she still has the mindset that if someone is a good guy they live in a story. The book has stories of different types of dances and ways that the dances were used in varous countries and eras. All in all it was a very nice book but just a bit above my kids. I am sure in a couple years time they will love it!

     The second book I was sent was The Real Princess A Mathemagical Tale, this one we had more luck with. Again with the same beautiful quality and illistrations as the first book. Paige was able to read this one aloud to us. It is the forever told tale of the Princess and the Pea with a mathmatical twist.

      At the end of the book there is a series of questions for your child to answer and test their multiplication skills. Paige was happy to learn that all numbers that are multiplied by 9 end up with digits that equal 9! This one was a hit!

      Paige asked me if I had placed peas under her mattress because she felt a hard lump when she was laying in bed the night before. I then checked under her mattress and found her sister's hiding place for her littlest Pet shops. What a funny way to find them! So I guess Paige must be a Real princess!
